According to the National Fire Protection Association, over a million reported fires in 2010 caused over 17,000 civilian injuries, over 3000 civilian deaths, and over $11 billion in property damage. Of those fires, less than half were structure fires, however it may not be surprising that those structure fires caused most of the injuries, deaths, and property damage. Furthermore, 92% of the deaths in structure fires resulted from fires in personal homes. The place within the home where these fires most commonly begin is the kitchen. Perhaps these sobering numbers can serve as a reminder that we need to be very careful with cooking and other appliances in the kitchen.

While many of these fires are caused by honest accidents or the carelessness of the resident of the home, many are also started by faulty wiring, defective electrical or gas appliances, or improper maintenance of rental homes.
